What will I talk about with my counsellor? As your counsellor I hope that I’ll be able to help you work out what the issues are that you’d most like to focus on. It’s vital that you progress at your own pace in an unpressurised environment. You may wish to talk about what’s going on for you, your thoughts, your emotions or other things you might find difficult. Or possibly there could be a particular issue you want us to focus on - bereavement or anxiety perhaps.
-
I’m not really sure if my problem is bad enough to seek counselling….If your problem is causing you stress and anxiety, then it’s a significant problem, not matter how ‘big’, ‘small’ or 'complex' you might perceive it to be.
-
What exactly happens as part of the initial consultation?Whether in-person or online, this initial meeting will provide us an opportunity to explore your current situation and the aspects of it that have led you to seek help. It would give us the opportunity to consider whether Psychodynamic counselling is a suitable fit for you. And, if so, arrange a suitably convenient time for our sessions.
-
What about confidentiality? Would anything be put on my medical records?Everything you tell me in our sessions is completely confidential – with the exception of a few extreme risk situations, which I would speak to you about in the initial consultation meeting. Aside from this, anything you might want to disclose will remain completely confidential and will not be entered onto your medical records.
-
How many sessions will I need? We'll discuss this at the initial consultation. Psychodynamic counselling can be a longer way of working but there is a growing body of evidence that shows that the benefits are longer-lasting.
-
How long are the sessions? All sessions are 50 minutes
